What vehicle(s) can haul a dirt bike?

The vehicle required to haul with a dirt bike hitch carrier varies depending on the weight of your dirt bike. On average, dirt bikes fall between 200 to 250 lbs. For generic guidance: a 200 lb. dirt bike, requires a vehicle with approximately 2,600 lbs. of towing capacity and a 250 lb. dirt bike, requires a vehicle with approximately 3,100 lbs. of towing capacity.

To calculate the requirements for your motorcycle, add the weight of the dirt bike hitch rack to your motorcycle, then multiply that number by 10 to factor for tongue capacity. Follow this example to calculate the minimum required towing capacity for hauling a 225 lb. dirt bike with a m3 carrier dirt bike rack.

225 lbs. (Motorcycle) + 57 lbs. (Carrier) = 282 lbs.
282 lbs. (Net Weight) x 10 = 2,820 lbs. (Minimum Required Towing Capacity)

Is towing capacity the same as tongue capacity?

No. Towing capacity is the weight your vehicle can pull with a trailer and tongue capacity is the weight your vehicle withstand pushing down on the hitch. In general, tongue capacity is 10% of towing capacity. Be sure to haul dirt bikes on a dirt bike hitch carrier within the tongue weight capacity of your vehicle. It is a critical safety factor.

What other products do you recommend for hauling with a dirt bike carrier?

When it comes to hauling with a dirt bike hitch carrier we recommend tie-downs first. Specifically, we recommend either the Ancra Original or Rat Pak, depending on your tie down preference. We also often recommend the height adjustment tube, to lift the dirt bike rack height for off-roading.

Can I load a dirt bike hitch rack by myself?

Yes, most dirt bike customers load their dirt bike rack by themselves, but we only recommend this based on your own comfort/experience. When first loading and unloading on a dirt bike hitch carrier, we recommend a helping hand for you and your bikes safety. For extra ease, we recommend parking near a curb to reduce the loading ramps angle.

Will my dirt bike be safe?

We have thousands of customers with dirt bike carriers all over the world with zero structural failures over 25 years. As long as you stay within your vehicle's tongue capacity limits and tie down safely, your dirt bike will be safe!
