Our Story

Founded in 1997, MotoTote was built from a simple idea: create a motorcycle carrier we could truly trust.

Growing up around motorcycles, we loved the freedom of riding — but the carriers available at the time were unstable, difficult to load, and hard on both bikes and vehicles.

So we built our own. A stronger, more reliable way to haul motorcycles safely and securely. Since then, MotoTote has evolved through real-world experience, innovation, and rider feedback into a trusted platform used worldwide for hauling sport bikes, dual sports, dirt bikes, scooters, mopeds, and electric bikes.

Timeline

1997

MotoTote Founded

MotoTote is founded by Marvin Hankins and Dan Diote with the goal of creating a safer, simpler way to haul motorcycles without a trailer. From the start, the focus is on durability, smart engineering, and rider-driven design.

1998

The Original MotoTote Carrier

The first MotoTote carrier was introduced in 1998 with a straightforward, heavy-duty design built around function and durability. It featured a more traditional steel construction and proudly carried the original MotoTote branding. While heavier and less refined than later generations, it established the foundation for what MotoTote would become — a dependable motorcycle carrier built for real-world hauling.

2004

Evolution for Modern Motorcycles

In 2004, MotoTote released an updated generation designed to better support the growing range of modern sport bikes and motorcycles. The carrier featured strengthened beam construction, improved functionality, and refinements that made the system easier to manufacture and ship. This era marked an important evolution toward a more versatile and user-friendly design.

2009

The MTX Platform Revolution

The launch of the MTX series in 2009 completely changed the direction of MotoTote. Built around a modular platform-and-components system, the MTX carriers introduced a more serviceable and adaptable approach to motorcycle hauling. The MTX platform became the backbone of the modern MotoTote ecosystem.

2021

The Max & Max+ Generation

MotoTote launched the Max and Max+ series — the most advanced carriers in company history. Built on over a decade of proven MTX experience, the new platform focused on maximum stability, lighter weight, and improved manufacturing quality through closer partnerships with domestic and international suppliers.

2022

The Rise of the Electric Bike Market

As electric bikes became heavier and more capable, traditional bike racks struggled to keep up. So MotoTote developed one of the first heavy-duty hauling solutions purpose-built for the evolving e-bike market: the MotoTote Mini.

Built with motorcycle-grade stability, the Mini was designed to carry one bike up to 200 lbs or two bikes up to 350 lbs total.

2022

Expanding to Dual Motorcycle Carriers

As riders looked to haul more than one motorcycle at a time, MotoTote expanded its lineup with dual carriers built from the Max and Max+ platforms — the strongest and lightest designs we had created to date. By adapting these proven heavy hauling systems into dual configurations, we delivered maximum confidence, stability, and strength for transporting two motorcycles at once.

2023

Developing Tie-Downs & Accessories

In 2023, MotoTote expanded beyond carriers by developing our own line of tie-downs and accessories designed specifically for hauling motorcycles with a hitch carrier. Products like the innovative TireSling introduced new ways to improve stability and security, while a growing ecosystem of accessories further refined the hauling experience for riders everywhere.

2025+

Continuous Innovation

MotoTote continues to innovate by developing new mechanisms, fold-up systems, and smarter hauling solutions designed around real rider needs. At the same time, we are focused on making our carriers more modular — creating adaptable systems that work with a growing range of parts, accessories, and hauling scenarios for greater flexibility on and off the road.

"Since our founding over 25 years ago, we have continuously innovated, bit by bit, year by year, to create the most advanced motorcycle carriers on the market. Every day, we strive to improve based on your feedback. MotoTote is the result of 25 years of input from our customers."
