Vehicle Requirements for Using a MotoTote

Before purchasing a MotoTote, make sure your vehicle meets these critical requirements. MotoTote carriers are designed to haul motorcycles and scooters using your vehicle’s hitch, but they rely on the right equipment and sufficient towing specs to operate safely.

1. Hitch Receiver Requirements

Your vehicle must have a 2" square Class III or higher hitch receiver.

  • This is a standard size in North America.
  • Not compatible with 1.25", European tow balls, or other hitch sizes without an adapter.
  • The hitch must be securely mounted to the vehicle frame, not a bumper or light-duty aftermarket installation.

2. Tongue Weight Capacity

MotoTote carriers don’t just pull weight — they suspend it off your hitch. That’s why tongue weight capacity is more important than towing capacity.

How to Check:

  • Find your vehicle’s towing capacity (usually in your owner's manual).
  • Multiply that number by 10% — that’s the maximum weight that MotoTote considers safe for hauling with your vehicle.
  • Subtract the MotoTote weight (typically 60 lbs) from that number.
  • The result is your maximum motorcycle weight.

Example:
Towing capacity: 3,000 lbs
Tongue capacity: 10% of 3,000 = 300 lbs
300 lbs – 60 lbs (MotoTote) = 240 lbs max motorcycle weight

Not all vehicles can carry full-size motorcycles. Please verify your numbers to ensure safety.
